Like I do say, the way some people come out with full strength to condemn men who hit their spouses, if they use only a fraction of that same energy to inspire some ladies to learn how to control their mouth and the violence they place on kids under them, there might be sanity in lots of homes these days.
As you read through this, a beautician, known as Oby, has been arrested by aid of the Lagos Police Command for allegedly beating her maid, named Miracle, to death at Lateef Aregbe Street, Ago Palace Way, Okota, area of Isolo in Lagos State.
It was gathered that the mother of two had descended at the 8-yr-old child on Saturday and beat the hell out of her until she collapsed and died.
The woman was allegedly plotting with some people to do away with the corpse when some of the neighbors raised the alarm and reported the case to the police.
Oby was eventually detained at the Isolo Police Division.
A resident of the area, who did not want to be exposed to the public, said the suspect has been observed beating the house help mercilessly for several months.
According to the report, he said anytime the house help who hailed from Anambra, was confronted by neighbors, she would ignore and abuse them.
He added, “She is a beautician and has two kids. She is heavily pregnant together with her third child. Oby’s husband was deported before he traveled again to Angola, wherein he is now based.
“She brought Miracle and one other girl identified as Chinacherem, from their village in Anambra State few years ago. The two girls have been going to school but she later stopped them.
“But, every time I go to their residence, she was always beating the house help. On every occasion people intervened, Oby would inform them to go their way because she brought Miracle from the village and it was none in their business.
“She usually maltreated the two children and would wake them up as early as 4.30am everyday to do house chores. She beat the two girls for the least provocation.
“Early Saturday, she descended on the girl again and beat to death. She called on some people to assist her in disposing of her corpse. They were about taking the body of the girl out whilst some people confronted them. The people she brought ran away immediately.”
The police from the Isolo division have been said to have arrested the suspect.
Also, the case was reported to official of the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender.
One of the officials of the agency, who did no want to be identified, stated that the other girl, Chinacherem who is 12-year-old had been taken away from the area by some family members who did not want her to testify against the suspect.
She added, “We gathered that Oby informed Chinacherem that once she is queried, she should tell people that she (Chinacherem) and the victim fought and she collapsed and died. After Chinacherem told the crowd that, she also added that it was what her madam asked her to say.
“But Oby has confessed to the police that she killed the house help. When we went to the station, we were not allowed to speak to her; however they confirmed it was a case of homicide. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.”
The Director of OPD, Mrs. Olubukola Salami, called for an end to child abuse in Lagos, State urging residents to always report such cases on before it is too late.
She said the agency would follow up the case to make sure justice was served.
She stated, “The girl’s life could have been saved if only people raised the alarm early enough and this is why we continually say in case you see something, say something. There’s no room for child abuse in Lagos State and we will make sure due diligence is done in this matter.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, also confirmed the incident, stating that the victim’s corpse had been deposited inside the Isolo General Hospital for autopsy.
He added, “The suspect, Obiageli, beat her house help, Miracle Edegwu, to death. She become arrested and transferred to the SCIID. The matter is under thorough investigation.”
