It was learnt on Monday that the crisis which started on Friday was as a result of the alarm raised by residents of Danare that their Cameroonian neighbours had encroached on their farmland.

The Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, said six Danare residents were shot by some Cameroonian gendarmes from Bodam community during an invasion into the Nigerian territory.

The commissioner, who visited the community on Sunday alongside other security chiefs, however, said that no life was lost.

Inuwa said, “We found out that six persons were shot and they are currently in the hospital as the gun pellets were being removed from their body.

“They were shot by the people of Bodam village from Cameroon. We have advised the people to restore normalcy and shun all forms of crisis and allow the government to take charge.

“They told us that they were preparing to repel the attack because the Cameroonian had encroached almost 43 kilometres into their land without any permission.”

But the member representing Boki 1 state Constituency in the Cross River House of Assembly, Dr Itam Abang, said two bodies had been deposited at the mortuary.

He said over 1,000 cocoa, plantain and banana farms were destroyed by the Cameroonian during the invasion.
